Where Your Tradie Business Needs to Show Up Online (Not Just Google)

Short answer: your business needs to be claimed and consistent on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and Apple Business Connect at minimum, plus a handful of legitimate Australian directories, because customers are searching for tradies on more than one platform and most competitors have only claimed the first one.

If you've done your Google profile and stopped there, this is what you're missing.

Google isn't the only search bar people use

Most local SEO advice starts and ends at Google, and for good reason, it's where most searches happen. But it's not the only one. Roughly half of Australians are on iPhones, and iPhone users default to Apple Maps and Siri, not Google, for a lot of "near me" searches. Anyone on a Windows laptop using Bing or Microsoft Copilot is searching a completely different index. If you've only claimed your Google profile, you're invisible on all of that traffic, and almost none of your competitors have bothered to fix it either.

The three to claim first, all free

Google Business Profile

Still the priority, still the biggest share of local search. If this isn't set up properly already, fix it before anything else on this list.

Bing Places for Business

Powers Bing search, Bing Maps, and increasingly Microsoft Copilot's AI answers. You can import your details straight from your Google Business Profile, so setup takes minutes, not a rebuild from scratch. Low effort, genuinely worth doing, and almost nobody in the trades has bothered.

Apple Business Connect

This is the one that actually matters and gets skipped constantly. It controls how your business appears in Apple Maps and Siri, the default map app on every iPhone in the country. If a customer asks Siri "electrician near me" and you're not claimed here, you don't exist to them, no matter how good your Google ranking is.

Claim all three with identical business details, name, address (or service area), phone number, exactly matching across each one.

Why the details matching matters more than the listings themselves

Here's the part that trips people up. It's not really about the traffic these extra listings send you directly, most of them won't send you many leads on their own. It's that Google and AI systems cross-check your business details across multiple sources to decide if you're a real, established business before trusting you enough to rank you or recommend you. A mismatched phone number or an old address on even one platform quietly undermines every other listing, including the ones that do send you work.

Consistency is the actual product here. The listing is just the container for it.

The Australian directories worth the ten minutes

Beyond the big three, there's a layer of established Australian directories that add genuine citation value: Yellow Pages (still active online, still free), Hotfrog, StartLocal, Brownbook, and AussieWeb. None of these will flood you with calls. What they do is add another few consistent confirmations of your business details across the web, which is exactly the signal search engines and AI systems are cross-checking for.

One honest exception worth knowing: True Local used to be a major Australian directory and now sits mostly dormant under different ownership. Don't waste time chasing a listing there expecting results.

What to actually avoid

Bulk citation packages that promise hundreds of directory listings for a small fee are the opposite of helpful. They scatter your business details across low-quality, often outdated sites, frequently with details that don't quite match, which creates the exact inconsistency that undermines your legitimate listings. A handful of accurate, consistent citations beats a hundred scattered, mismatched ones every time.

Where this actually pays off

A customer who Googles you, checks Apple Maps out of habit, or asks Siri while driving should find the same business, same number, same details, everywhere they look. That consistency is what turns a maybe into a call, and it's what search engines and AI assistants use to decide you're worth recommending in the first place. Most of your competitors have only done step one. Doing steps two and three properly is a genuine, low-cost edge that takes an afternoon, not an ongoing spend. The Local Visibility Package and other options are listed in full if you'd rather have the setup handled for you.

FAQ

Do I need to be on Bing if most people use Google?
Yes, if you want full coverage. Bing has a smaller share of search but reaches everyone on Windows devices and increasingly feeds Microsoft Copilot's AI answers. It takes minutes to set up by importing from your Google profile, so there's little reason to skip it.
Why does Apple Maps matter if I'm already on Google Maps?
Because iPhone users default to Apple Maps and Siri, not Google, for a lot of local searches. Being claimed on Apple Business Connect is the only way to appear in those results, and most tradies haven't done it.
Are paid directory listing packages worth it?
Generally no. Bulk paid packages tend to scatter your details across low-quality directories with inconsistent information, which can undermine your credibility rather than help it. A small number of accurate, well-maintained listings is more valuable than a large number of scattered ones.
How long does it take for a new directory listing to help my search ranking?
It varies, but new listings typically take a few weeks to be discovered and factored in. The value builds cumulatively as your details stay consistent across more platforms over time, rather than delivering an instant jump.
Is this more important than getting Google reviews?
No, reviews still carry more weight for both ranking and actually convincing someone to call. Citations are the foundation underneath that, worth having, but reviews are still where your effort should go first if you're choosing between the two.
